Geek Proposes To Girlfriend Over Video Game

April 16th, 2008 Posted in Computers, News Articles, Online, Special Interest, Technology

Usually, men pop the question by hiding a ring in a bouquet of flowers, or by placing a message on the jumbo screen during a baseball game. For one New Jersey man, that just wasn’t enough.

Bernie Peng knew his girlfriend, Tammy Li, loved to play the video game “Bejeweled,” so when he was ready to propose, he reprogrammed the game to display the usual “Will You Marry Me?” message along with a computer-generated digitized engagement ring once Li reached a certain score. Last December, Li reached the score and happily said yes.

Peng wrote about the experience on his blog, saying it took a month to reprogram so the game would display his proposal. When word of the romantic gesture reached Bejeweled distributor PopCap, the company congratulated Peng.

“Most video game companies would frown on people manipulating their games,” said PopCap spokesman Garth Chouteau. “But it won him a woman. As a bunch of geeks, we have to say, ‘Bernie, hats off to you.’”

Not only has it won him a woman, it’s won him a honeymoon and free videogames. PopCap has promised to fly Peng and Li to their corporate city of Seattle for their honeymoon. PopCap also pledges to give Peng and Li’s wedding guests copies of Bejeweled.

@Jones: There are at least two sources in the articles. Click the links. Additionally, all articles are uniquely RE-WRITTEN instead of just copy/pasted.

I love the fact that not only did he find a really unique way to propose, but I love the fact that he choose the game SHE liked. Sounds like he’s a keeper. Oh, and a reasonable score….can you imagine if he made it too hard of a score too hit?
