TiVo Users Get YouTube Streaming
Last Thursday, TiVo users were surprised when their software update suddenly allowed them to stream YouTube videos—something that had been previously reserved for Apple TV and iPod Touch users.
While the update spans all TiVo boxes currently in use, only Series 3 and TiVo HD subscribers will be able to take advantage of the YouTube streaming. Currently, there is no way to log in to a YouTube account via TiVo, which accesses YouTube online in the same way it accesses electronic program guide information; folks at YouTube say this feature will be offered in a few weeks via yet another update.
There’s currently no plans to offer other sites like Hulu or Veoh via TiVo’s interface, but nothing can be ruled out right now. TiVo also allows customers to download purchased movies and television showss via Amazon’s Unbox service, as well as stream audio from user-created stations on Live365.com.
TiVo was launched in 1997 aimed at providing the United States with an alternative to videocassette recording by using an electronic program guide to digitally record either a single or a series of television programs onto a computer hard disc. TiVo currently employs 400 people and offers services in the United States and Canada, with plans to launch service in Australia soon.
